The cave of Petralona “embellished” with stalagmites and stalactites is located in the west foot of the Katsika (Goat) mountain and in an altitude of about 300 meters from the level of sea.

The systematic excavations of the Cave began in 1965 by the founder of the Anthropologic Company of Greece, anthropologist professor Aris Paulianos. His researches proved that the Arhanthropos is about 700.000 years old, and this makes him the “oldest” European.

This age was determined after the detailed analysis of stratigraphy (until today 28 geological layer have been revealed), and after studying the primitive and Paleolithic tools as well as the palaiofauna that were discovered in almost all the layers.

Among the fossils of animals that have extinct the following are included: lions, hyenas, bears, panthers, elephants, rhinoceros, megakeroi, bison and various species of deer and hippo, and also 25 species of birds, 16 species of rodents and 17 species of bats.

Important antiquities have been discovered in the wider area of Ouranoupoli. A tomb of Roman era was discovered in the position Kokkinocharafo, approximately 1km east of the village.

It is on a low hill, near the road that leads to Zygou monastery and the borderline of Mount Athos.

The discovery was made in a private property during flattening operations. The finding might not initially impress but it provides a new element of an archaeologically undiscovered area, which is known to be highly populated during the ancient period.

Near the village of Varvara there are two amazing waterfalls in a forest full of taxus, alders, lindens, beeches and wild hazels. Both the location and the feeling of calmness and serenity will make you feel like you have discovered a small paradise.

You will notice the two waterfalls entering the ravine, after you have parked your car. The water leads to Mavrolaka, a river that is the boundary between Olympiada and Varvara. You will see the first waterfall from above, whereas in the second one you will feel its momentum even in the summer.

It takes a short walk (5-10 minutes) to discover this wonderful place. Both the wooden bridges and the proper marks on the path contribute to the enjoyment of the unique scenery. It is ideal for families with kids who will be thrilled!

Ancient Akanthos stretched in three hills of the Stratoniko mountain, in an 560 acre area, approximately 600m southeast from the Ierissos settlement.

The walled city of Akanthos was named after the many thorns of the region or after the thorn-formed shape of the fortification.

A systematic excavation has yet to be done. Some of the travelers of the previous century report the existence of an ancient pier in the port of the city. Indeed, present evidence regarding the city start from the beach of Ierissos, where ruins of a platform of the ancient port are preserved.

he Aristotle’s Park, a unique theme park of Halkidiki, is located at an altitude of about 500 meters, in the historical village of Stagira, beside the remains of Machalas, the capital of Mademochoria. It is worth visiting for its interesting instruments and the great view to the gulf of Ierissos.

The park preexisted and the wonderful location was chosen in 1956 to host the statue of Aristotle, made by sculptor Nicholas, in honor of the great philosopher who was born in Ancient Stagira.

The unique interactive instruments were placed there in 2003 by the Municipal. They are experimental instruments, operating by rules of physics that are mentioned in Aristotle’s textbooks and especially in the one called “The Naturals”.

With this addition, the park has become a favorite destination for every visitor and school, since it combines recreation, entertainment and education. It is estimated that has more than 15.000 visitors during the summer. The tower of Madem Agas is also located there, with the house that was the administrative center of Sidirokafsia mines.

Admire the world renowned sights of Mount Athos aboard an intimate 3-hour cruise and be mesmerized by the unique Byzantine architecture of the monasteries and the untouched natural beauty surrounding them.

Our partner’s boat hosts up to 140 passengers and is the best choice for those seeking an intimate cruise experience and personalized service. With fewer guests on board, the atmosphere is warm and friendly and the service personal.

Start our journey at 11:00 from the port of Ouranoupolis, a small village at the edge of the frontier between the Holy Mountain and the rest of the world. After about 5 minutes of sailing we meet the borders of the monasterial city which are defined on the ground by an imaginary line that starts from the location “Fragocastro” in the west coast and reaches the cape “Arapis” in the opposite end. From this point we enter into the region of Mount Athos and you can feel the spiritual aura of this place even as you stand on the deck of our boat as we sail along the coastline of peninsula and come face to face with the impressive monasteries clinging to the cliffs.

Our professional multilingual guided-tour makes the cruise even more memorable by providing informal commentary while we pass in front of each monastery.

After 15 minutes we see the first Russian skete “Thivaida” and about 20 minutes later the “arsanas” of the Serbian monastery of Chilandariou. (Arsanas means a building used like a small port connecting an inland monastery with the sea.) Next following two more inland monasteries, the Bulgarian monastery of Zografou and the Greek one of Konstamonitou.

The first monastery which is down on the coast and we get clear views is Dochiariou and after a while along the coast is Xenofontos. The next coastal monastery is the hugely impressive Agiou Panteleimonos which is characterised by the green onion domes of churches standing above the red-roofed buildings.

Further on is Dafni, the main port of Mount Athos where monks and pilgrims come ashore and take the bus for the inland monasteries. Just before Dafni perched on the hill side is the monastery of Xiropotamou, about 500m above the sea. After passing the small Russian Skete of Agios Modestos we reach one of the most impressive sights of our journey. The monastery of Simonos Petras is truly breathtaking, something that many of you have seen before but up until now only on postcards. An imposing building of 14th century, consists of seven floors and located on top of a rocky ridge. Afterward is following the monastery of Osiou Grigoriou, also on a clifftop and after 10 minutes is Agiou Dionysiou perched 100m above the sea. The last monastery of our trip is Agiou Pavlou, which is nestling below the Holy mountain of Athos.

At this point as we start to turn round and head back for Ouranoupolis you can see “Nea Skiti” and “Skiti Agias Annas”, two of the most famous sketes of Mount Athos.

And if all of these are not enough for you, our cruise is not ends here…You can feed the seagulls or enjoy a company of dolphins sailing with us under our bow and if you are lucky enough you will spot one of the 2-3 Mediterranean monk seals living here, leaving you with precious moments and lasting memories.

During our way back you have enough time to drink a cold refreshment or a glass of ouzo with Greek appetizers, to do your shopping onboard, to visit our boat’s bridge and take photos of yourselves with the Captain or just to enjoy our free wifi network. In the main deck of our boat except the bar for drinks, cold food and coffees there is also a small art shop where you can buy original souvenirs from Mount Athos in very competitive prices.

We’re back in Ouranoupolis at 14:00.
